Running an AI automation? OpenAI shuts down GPT-4o and GPT-4.1 in the API on 14 January
Four older OpenAI models will disappear from the API on 14 January 2027. If your business uses a chatbot or automation that points to them, it will stop working unless you switch.
On 14 October 2026 OpenAI told developers that GPT-4o, GPT-4o mini, GPT-4.1 and GPT-4.1 mini will be removed from the API on 14 January 2027. Fine-tuned versions of these models shut down the same day.
OpenAI recommends GPT-6 Luna as the replacement for all four. According to OpenAI's price list, Luna costs $0.10 per million input tokens and $0.50 per million output tokens.
The change applies to the API, not the ChatGPT app. It affects customer service bots, document flows and no-code automations in tools like Zapier or Make that call OpenAI with one of the old model names.
Three months sounds like plenty of time, but if you rely on a consultant or an old integration it is wise to check now.
How to get started
- Go through your automations and search for "gpt-4o" or "gpt-4.1" in the settings.
- Switch to gpt-6-luna in a test flow and compare the answers for a few days.
- Ask your supplier or consultant whether they have a plan before 14 January.
