Microsoft builds Word, Excel and PowerPoint into the Copilot app
Microsoft lets you go from an idea in Copilot chat to a finished Word document, Excel sheet or presentation without switching apps. For now only in the Frontier early-access programme.
On 9 October 2026 Microsoft started rolling out Office in the new Copilot app. You start in Chat or Cowork, let Copilot make a first draft, then edit and collaborate in the same view. If you like, you can continue in regular Word, Excel or PowerPoint. Files are saved in OneDrive.
The feature comes first to Frontier, Microsoft's programme for early users of new Copilot features. Microsoft hasn't said when everyone else gets it.
The same week PowerPoint on desktop got the "Clarify my thinking" skill (from 8 October), where Copilot asks critical questions about your presentation before you present it. It requires a Microsoft 365 Copilot licence.
What does it mean for you? If you don't have Microsoft 365 Copilot through work, nothing changes today. But it shows where Office is heading: the chat becomes the starting point.
How to get started
- If you have Copilot through work: ask PowerPoint to quiz you about your next presentation.
- Don't pay for a Copilot licence just for this. Wait until the features reach your plan.
- Compare with the free alternatives in our guide before you buy.
