Do you share AI chats by link? How to clean up your shared links

A security firm found thousands of shared chats from Meta's AI app Muse that could be opened without anyone being sent the link. According to the firm, Meta has now paused sharing. Muse is only available in the US, but ChatGPT and Gemini have share links too. Anyone with such a link can read the chat, and the link does not expire by itself. Here is how to see which links you have and delete them.

On 18 October 2026 the security firm Claroc published a review of Muse, Meta's AI agent. Muse launched in September and is only available in the US. When you ask Muse to share a conversation, it creates a page that anyone with the link can open. Claroc found more than 6,800 such shared pages through public records of web addresses, without anyone having sent them the links. Most were harmless, but some contained things like a loan application, an internal revenue review and notes ahead of a confidential call.

On 20 October Claroc updated its review: according to Claroc, Meta told the news site Ars Technica that the sharing feature is being paused, and the links Claroc tested no longer opened. Meta has not confirmed the pause in any announcement of its own that we have found.

The problem in Muse was that the page title was part of the web address itself, which made the links easy to find. But the basic rule applies to every AI service that shares by link: a shared chat is not private. If you use ChatGPT or Gemini, a chatbot, meaning an AI you chat with, it is wise to check now and then which chats you have shared.

In ChatGPT, anyone with a link from a personal account can see the shared chat, and the link can be forwarded. Links have no expiry date, so they work until you delete them. Images and uploaded files can be included. OpenAI itself says you should not share health information, financial details, passwords or account numbers. Good to know: locking a chat in ChatGPT does not delete a link you have already shared. It has to be deleted separately. Links from ChatGPT Business or Enterprise can only be opened by people in the same workspace.

Gemini works in a similar way. According to Google's help page, anyone with the link can read the chat, share it on and in some cases continue the chat themselves. Images you uploaded are included. You can delete one link or all links at once. Posts where you pasted the link yourself, for example on social media, are not removed automatically.

How to get started

  1. ChatGPT: open Settings, choose Data controls and then Manage next to Shared links.
  2. Delete links you no longer need with Delete shared link, or remove all of them via More actions and Delete all shared links.
  3. Gemini on a computer: go to gemini.google.com, click Settings & help at the bottom and choose Your public links. Click Delete public link, or Delete all.
  4. Before you share next time: read through the whole chat and remove names, ID numbers, account numbers and passwords. Send a copy of the answer itself rather than the whole chat.
  5. Never share a link to a chat containing health details or sensitive customer data.
