Gemini can now create and edit documents, PDFs and slide decks right in the chat, for free and in every language

Since 29 October you can ask Gemini to make a document, a PDF, a spreadsheet or a slide deck and then change it right in the chat: type edits yourself, highlight text and ask about it, or have Gemini adjust it. It is for all users in every language where Gemini is available. PDFs also work on mobile; other file types are web only.

Until now you could ask a bot, an AI you chat with like ChatGPT or Gemini, to write something for you, but to change it you had to copy it into Word or Google Docs. On 29 October Google announced that Gemini can now create, preview and edit files directly in the chat.

It works like this: you ask Gemini to make a file, for example a PDF study guide from your handwritten lecture notes, as in Google’s own example. The file appears in the chat. You can open it full screen and type changes yourself, highlight part of the text and ask a question about it, or ask Gemini to change just that section. According to The Verge you can also highlight a table and ask Gemini to turn it into a chart.

Several file types are supported. Slide decks can be previewed, edited and then opened in Google Slides or downloaded as PowerPoint (PPTX) or PDF. Spreadsheets, such as a simple tracker, open directly in Google Sheets. Documents can be PDF, Google Docs, Markdown or plain text, and you can save them to Google Drive. PDFs can be previewed and edited on both web and mobile. All other file types work on the web only for now.

What does it cost? According to Google the feature is available to all users in all languages where the Gemini app is available. It covers personal Google accounts, Workspace Individual and all Google Workspace customers, and Google mentions no paid plan requirement. Users of all ages who have access to the Gemini app can generate files, according to Google’s Workspace updates blog.

Good to know: the content is still written by AI. Read everything and make the text your own before you hand it in, send it or share it, and check numbers, names and dates. Do not upload sensitive details such as ID numbers, customer data or health information unless you know how your account handles them. How to get started

  1. Go to gemini.google.com in your browser and sign in with your Google account.
  2. Say which file you want and what it is for, for example: make a PDF study guide from my notes, two pages at most. Attach the notes as a photo or file.
  3. Open the file full screen. Highlight anything wrong or unclear and ask Gemini to change just that, or rewrite it yourself.
  4. Read the whole file and make it your own. Then download it, open it in Google Docs, Sheets or Slides, or save it to Drive.
