Meta releases Muse Glimmer: a free AI model that runs on an ordinary computer with a graphics card

Meta has released Muse Glimmer, an open AI model built to carry out multi-step tasks directly on your own computer. It is free to download, but needs a computer with a powerful graphics card and some technical know-how.

On 19 October 2026 Meta published a technical report on Muse Glimmer, a smaller sibling of the large Muse Spark Open. Glimmer has 30 billion parameters and is made to work as an agent, meaning an AI that plans and carries out multi-step tasks itself and uses tools along the way.

What is new is that it is built to run locally. According to Meta, a computer with a single consumer graphics card is enough, because the model is compressed to roughly 4-bit precision. Everything can happen on your own machine without the text being sent to a cloud service.

The model understands text and images and answers in text. It is trained on more than a hundred languages, but Meta does not name specific Nordic languages. According to Meta it is the best in its size class at tool use and multi-step planning, compared with models such as Gemma 4 31B and Qwen 3.6 27B.

What does it cost? The model itself is free and released under the Apache 2.0 licence, which also allows commercial use. What you pay for is the computer. For most beginners, an ordinary free chatbot, meaning an AI you chat with like ChatGPT, is still easier.

How to get started

  1. Curious but not technical: wait until the model is available in ready-made apps for local AI.
  2. Does your business handle sensitive documents: ask whoever runs your IT to look at local AI as an alternative to cloud services.
  3. Always check the licence and hardware requirements in Meta's own report before building anything on the model.
