ChatGPT's voice mode gets a new model and new voices – free users too
OpenAI is upgrading the Live voice mode to GPT-Live-1.1 with more natural pronunciation in more languages. Free users get a limited amount, while Go and Plus get up to three hours a day.
On 15 October 2026 OpenAI began rolling out GPT-Live-1.1 in ChatGPT's Live voice mode, together with a smaller version called GPT-Live-1.1 Quip. OpenAI promises more natural accents across languages. The voice also tells you more often when it is searching the web, instead of just going quiet.
There are 13 new voices, including options for French, German, Hindi, Japanese, Korean and Mexican Spanish. The Nordic languages are not named, but OpenAI says the improvement covers many languages beyond English. Which voices you see depends on your region and account.
Live can search the web, remember things you have told it and use the apps you have connected to ChatGPT while you talk. Video and screen sharing are not available in Live; the older Advanced mode remains for that.
Usage per rolling 24 hours according to OpenAI: the free plan gets limited access to Quip (the limit may change), Go 3 hours with Quip, Plus 3 hours with GPT-Live-1.1, Pro at $100 15 hours and Pro at $200 unlimited. Business Standard has 3 hours and Business Premium 15 hours.
How to get started
- Update the ChatGPT app and open Settings → Voice. Choose Live if it is available.
- Pick a voice and talk to it in your own language for a while to hear how the pronunciation sounds.
- Practise something you find hard: a job interview, a pay review or a conversation in a new language. The Prompt Workshop has a ready-made prompt.
- Never say passwords, ID numbers or card numbers out loud in an AI chat.
