ChatGPT on your phone can now hold two accounts: keep work and private apart

The ChatGPT app for iPhone and Android now lets you stay signed in to two accounts and switch without signing out. Chats, memory and files stay fully separate. Here is how to add an account and why it suits small business owners.

ChatGPT is a bot, meaning an AI you chat with. Many people use a single account for both private life and work, so private questions, customer emails and company numbers end up in the same chat history and the same memory.

On 30 October OpenAI started rolling out account switching in the ChatGPT apps for iPhone and Android. You can stay signed in to up to two accounts and switch between them without signing out. Only one account is active at a time. Account switching is also available on the web, according to the OpenAI Help Center.

The accounts share nothing. According to OpenAI, no chats move between them, memory and history are not shared, files and uploads are not shared, and subscriptions and billing are not combined. If you pay for ChatGPT Plus on one account, it only applies there. A new second account costs nothing and starts on the Free plan.

On the phone you can get notifications from both accounts. Tap a notification for the other account and the app switches to it.

Good to know: always check which account is active before you paste customer details or ask about your company. If your work account is managed by an organisation, the administrator may be able to access data in it. Always read the answers and make them yours. Don't just copy-paste. If you do not see Switch account yet, the rollout may still be under way: update the app and give it a few days. Want your work account to know who you are?
