Gemini can now manage your notebooks right in the chat – but in the EU you have to switch it on yourself

Gemini Notebook is now available as a connected app in Gemini. Type @Gemini Notebook in the chat and Gemini can create notebooks, add sources and answer based on what you have already collected. It works with ordinary free accounts too, but in the EU and the rest of the EEA it is switched off by default. Here is how to turn it on, and what it cannot do yet.

On 23 October 2026 Google announced that Gemini Notebook, Google's tool for collecting sources and notes on a topic, is now also available as a Connected App in the Gemini app. That means you can manage your notebooks in plain language right in a chat, instead of opening them one by one.

If you type @Gemini Notebook in the chat you can ask Gemini to create, edit or delete a notebook, add or remove sources, list your notebooks and their sources, and answer questions based on what is in them. Google writes that Gemini can also work out by itself when the connection is needed. An example: "What do my notebooks say about the bathroom renovation?"

The feature is available for personal Google accounts, Google Workspace Individual and all Workspace customers. It is switched on by default worldwide, except in the European Economic Area (EEA), where it is off by default. In Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland you therefore have to connect it yourself. According to Google's help page the connection is only available on gemini.google.com and in the Gemini mobile app, not in the Gemini app for Mac yet, and it is rolling out gradually.

There are limits. Many notebook features require the Keep Activity setting to be on, meaning Gemini saves your activity. Without it Gemini cannot, for example, save new chats in the notebook or pull files from Google Drive as sources. And even though Google's blog mentions the example "add a copy of this chat", the help page says Gemini cannot yet add chats to notebooks through the connection, even with Keep Activity on.

Who is this good for? If you already collect sources in Gemini Notebook, for example for an exam, a trip, a purchase or a business plan, it saves clicks. Remember that what you put in a notebook becomes material for Gemini's answers, so do not add anything you do not want Google to handle, and check important answers against the sources.

How to get started

  1. Go to gemini.google.com or open the Gemini mobile app and sign in.
  2. Click Customize in the side menu and choose Connectors. If you cannot find Customize, click More first.
  3. Find Gemini Notebook and click Add. You can also type @Gemini Notebook in a chat and follow the instructions.
  4. Try it: "@Gemini Notebook create a notebook about our trip to Copenhagen" or "Which sources are in my notebook about electric cars?".
  5. If you no longer want to use the connection: go back to Connectors and choose Disconnect.
