Copilot free vs Microsoft 365: when is free enough, and when do Personal or Premium pay off?
Copilot is free on the web and in the app. If you want Copilot inside Word, Excel and Outlook you need a Microsoft 365 subscription. Here are the prices in Sweden in October 2026 and who needs what.
You can use Microsoft Copilot free on the web and in the app for chat, questions, ideas and simple help. According to Microsoft, the free version is limited and depends on available capacity. It is a good first step if you mostly need a bot, meaning an AI you chat with, outside the Office apps.
Copilot inside Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook is not part of the free version. For that you need a Microsoft 365 subscription with Copilot. Microsoft's Swedish price page currently has no separate Copilot Pro subscription for consumers; the AI level follows your Microsoft 365 plan.
Consumer prices in Sweden (Microsoft, checked 19 October 2026): Microsoft 365 Personal costs SEK 119.99/month or SEK 1,199.99/year. It is for one person and includes the desktop apps, 1 TB of storage and Copilot with higher limits than free. Family costs SEK 155.99/month or SEK 1,559/year. Up to six people share the apps and 2 TB of storage, but Copilot only applies to the subscription owner.
Premium costs SEK 254.99/month or SEK 2,549.99/year. It gives much more AI usage and agent features that do research and analysis for you. Here too, AI only applies to the owner. All three plans can be tried free for one month, but they renew automatically unless you cancel.
Rule of thumb: stay on free Copilot if you only chat now and then. If you already use Word and Excel every week, Personal is often better value than stacking several AI subscriptions. Choose Premium only when you often hit the limits in Personal or need the agent features. Do not put work files in a private account unless your employer's rules allow it. Prices outside Sweden differ, so check Microsoft's page for your country.
How to get started
- Try free Copilot for a week for email drafts and questions.
- Check whether you already pay for Microsoft 365 or only use the free web apps.
- Need Copilot in the desktop apps? Compare Personal with Premium on Microsoft's page. Paying yearly is cheaper.
- Family: remember that AI only applies to the owner. Others need their own subscription for Copilot in the apps.
- Trying it free for a month? Set a reminder before the trial ends.
