Denmark is building an AI assistant for borger.dk and sundhed.dk

The Danish Agency for Digital Government has given the IT consultancy Nine the job of building a shared public AI assistant. borger.dk and sundhed.dk come first, and the assistant is to be based on trusted government sources. Neither a price nor a launch date has been announced.

On 21 October 2026 the Danish Agency for Digital Government (Digitaliseringsstyrelsen) announced that the IT consultancy Nine has won the contract to build a first version of a shared public digital assistant, and the technology behind it. It will be a chatbot, an AI you chat with like ChatGPT, but for questions about public services.

The first websites to get the assistant are borger.dk, where Danes handle their dealings with authorities, and sundhed.dk, the Danish healthcare portal. The assistant is meant to give general guidance across different authorities and is based on generative AI. The agency writes that it will base its answers on trusted sources from public authorities.

The project is part of Denmark's joint digitalisation strategy for 2026 to 2029. According to KL's knowledge centre, the partners include KL, Danish Regions, ATP, the Danish Tax Agency and sundhed.dk, and the plan is to roll the assistant out to more public websites later. The agency has not said when the assistant will be available or what the contract costs.

What does it mean for the rest of the Nordics? Nothing directly yet. But it shows how Nordic authorities are starting to use AI chatbots to answer citizens' questions. Until official AI assistants exist, it is wise to always check answers from an ordinary chatbot against the authority's own website, especially for tax, healthcare and benefits.

How to get started

  1. If you live or work in Denmark: keep an eye on borger.dk and sundhed.dk, where the assistant is due to appear first.
  2. If you ask an ordinary chatbot about tax, healthcare or benefits: ask it to link to the source and check the answer on the authority's website.
  3. Never type ID numbers or sensitive health details into an ordinary chatbot.
